無論是古典、跨界或流行，華裔大提琴家馬友友總讓我們見識大提琴的極致魅力。1955年出生於巴黎的馬友友，八歲便在伯恩斯坦指揮下首次公開演出，1980年代開始嶄露頭角，以大提琴獨奏、室內樂、藝術推廣、音樂教育等多重身分獲得樂迷毫無保留的喜愛，這些成就單從他歷年獲得十七座葛萊美獎便可一窺究竟。而不僅演出並錄製許多大提琴經典曲目，馬友友更致力於跨界與創新的突破，諸如「巴哈靈感」、「絲路計畫」、電影配樂…等成功嘗試，不僅為大提琴開拓了無限的可能性，更讓馬友友成為「無所不能」的全能藝術家。
自1980年開始，馬友友與Sony Classical已經合作超過三十年，錄製九十張以上叫好又賣座的各類專輯，這套8CD「馬友友大提琴大師名曲集」便是集結馬友友所演奏包括巴哈、貝多芬、布拉姆斯、柴可夫斯基、到華爾頓等音樂史上最經典、最重要的大提琴協奏曲與奏鳴曲，錄音時間則從1980年的聖桑大提琴協奏曲，一直到2003年的韋瓦第大提琴協奏曲。這套合輯見證馬友友在純粹古典曲目的最非凡成就，其中多張都獲得葛萊美等唱片大獎殊榮，絕對是愛樂者最值得收藏的馬友友傳世之作。
