伯恩斯坦（Leonard Bernstein）堪稱是本世紀最偉大的指揮家、作曲家及鋼琴家。其主要音樂教育完成於哈佛大學，1939年畢業後，又在寇蒂斯音樂院隨萊納學習作曲， 1940年在壇格塢伯克夏音樂中心向庫塞維茨基（Sergey Koussevitzky）學習指揮。1943年任紐約愛樂管弦樂團的副指揮，代替因病無法指揮的華爾特（Bruno Walter），首度登臺便大獲成功。此後指揮的邀約不斷。身為土生土長的美國人，他是得到領導頂尖美國交響樂團殊榮的第一人，因此辭職時榮獲「桂冠指 揮」的稱號。
早在伯恩斯坦成為一名專業指揮之前，他就已經以作曲家身分聞名樂壇，擔任指揮後亦有不少傑作。重要作品有音樂歌舞劇「西城故事」（West Side Story）、「錦城春色」（On The Town, 1944），歌劇「康第德」（Candide, 1956），第一號交響曲「耶利米亞」（Jeremiah, 1942）、第2號「不安的年代」（The Age of Anxiety, 1949）、第3號「卡迪希」（Kaddish, 1963），以及小提琴獨奏、弦樂和打擊樂的「小夜曲」（Serenade, 1954），芭蕾舞劇「自由想像」（Fancy Free, 1944）等。
伯恩斯坦的觀念新穎，因此創意無限，對自己的詮釋、指揮、作曲見解獨到，但也因而引起極大爭議，然而其大師的地位卻不曾稍減，反倒是在其去世之後益形穩固。
